Meet $hun: A Quiet Man and His Play on Words

Sitting down with Houston’s own $hun, from Mo-City, we got the chance to see what’s been keeping him in the mix.

“To be honest I never saw myself being a musician. Well not a rapper at least” rapper, $hun says. He says when he started doing cyphers and freestyles back in school in Nacogdoches is when people started to know him as an artist. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, $hun resides in Houston. This artist is starting to move and the only way to go is up!

Speaking on his film “Hood Tales”, $hun states,”I LOVED the reactions I got off of HoodTales. It was such a big step for me. I knew immediately after finishing the songs I wanted to do a short film. I just wasn’t sure how it would turn out. With the help of my video director Kadrien Yelsom and videographer TheFilmLord, I feel like we made a masterpiece. It spread like wildfire all over Twitter gaining me new fans from everywhere. I never thought that from my own thoughts I could impact people like I did with the release of that visual.”

Gathering his fan base from the past 2 to 3 years, applying his work and bringing something new seems to be the focus for this artist. He speaks on collaborating with artist like Kendrick Lamar and Anderson Paak, and if you know anything about those two artist, you know that they come with their own style of music that can’t be replaced.

When asked about his writing ritual, $hun states that simplicity and free-flow is the way. “I just let all creativity take over. I usually jot down the first few things that come to my head and just try to build on that.”

We had to ask about the massive Jordan collection. We asked “What’s your obsession with the Jordan shoe collection?” “I’m glad you said obsession” he says, “because I’m nothing like the “Sneakerheads” of today. It was always more to me than just having the newest kicks so I can look good or be ‘cool’.  I used to just buy them and let them sit. I actually had a LOVE for this sneaker CULTURE. It wasn’t a game to me. I could tell you actual information about these shoes. What year they released, who designed them, where the inspiration behind the designs came from, what year the first generation of retros came about for certain sneakers, Jordan’s stats in certain sneakers, even which shoes Jordan wore during his most iconic moments. Even though I didn’t watch him play throughout his prime, when I was young and trying to start my own hoop dreams he was still the god of basketball and through my obsession with basketball came my obsession with Jordan and from there came my obsession with his sneakers.”

Stop what you’re doing and go check out this artist, Hood Tales part 1&2 is up on YouTube!
